School Award System
Our award system is used to promote good behaviour in the classroom and in the playground. Students earn 15 mini-merits to complete one card. There are 5 cards at each level.
Bronze = 1 - 5 cards completed
Silver = 6 - 10 cards completed
Gold = 11 - 15 cards completed
Gold Bar = 16-20 cards completed
Mini- merit awards are earned for improvement in work, good behaviour and citizenship.
Student achievement is acknowledged at assemblies and in newsletters and by participating in special activities for award winners. Reward systems are also operating in each classroom and are tailored to individual class needs.
Discipline Policy
Effective school discipline is one aspect of Student Welfare. Howlong Public School's central purpose is to ensure quality teaching and learning.
Howlong Public School has an effective Student Welfare policy in place which ensures each child's safety and security.
Supervision - Before and After School
Supervision begins at 8.30am when teachers are officially required to be on duty. Any child who arrives before 8.30am is expected to sit on the seats provided in the assembly area. Responsibility for children entering the school grounds before that time rests entirely with parents.
At the conclusion of school, children are expected to leave the school grounds as quickly as possible - either across the crossing or by the supervised Larmer Street entrance. A teacher will supervise bus children until departure.
The school grounds are closed to students and others after 3.00pm each school day except when under direct supervision for specific purposes.
Late Arrivals
All children who arrive late to school must obtain a late slip from the office before going to class.
Leaving the school
Whilst at school, students are the responsibility of the staff and therefore are not permitted to leave the grounds unless they have a note from you.
Permission must be obtained from the Principal or the Assistant Principals before leaving the grounds.
Parent signed notes are required for all absences. These include leaving the school early for appointments, not returning to school after lunch, or illness. These notes are a legal requirement and we appreciate your prompt explanation of any absence.
Dismissal of Kindergarten
During the first week of the school year Kindergarten will be dismissed at 1:00pm.
After the first week of settling in and becoming used to the routines of school, the children will be expected to stay at school until the normal dismissal time of 3.00pm each day.

Lost Property
All clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags etc. should be clearly marked with your child’s name (lost articles can then be returned to the owner quickly).
We have a lost clothing box. This is situated in the AV Room near the Library.
Hats - Sun Protection Policy
No Hat - No Play
All students are to wear a hat outside the classrooms. Hats are provided on enrolment and can be left in the classroom each day.
Students who do not wear the broad brimmed hat are required to sit in the shade for health and safety reasons.
Peer Support
A Peer Support program is established each year to promote self-esteem, communication and leadership skills in students. Peer Support encourages a unified and friendly environment for all children and encourages our K-6 philosophy.
